Lou Doillon – Places

lou doillon

Lou Doillon’s debut Places (June 18, Verve) was called “one of the best discs released in France for over a decade” by the French mag Rock & Folk upon its release there last fall. Written in Doillon’s kitchen after a difficult break-up, these songs weren’t really supposed to become her first album. “I couldn’t live without writing these songs, alone, for me,” she says, “but my girlfriends kept asking me to play them the songs, and it all went from there.” Places got raves in Europe, with one publication calling it “splendid and miraculous,” and it earned her the Female Artist Of The Year award at the French Grammys. As a model and actress, Doillon is French royalty. The face of Givenchy, her father is movie director Jacques Doillon, her mother ’60s chanteuse/actress Jane Birkin and singer/actress Charlotte Gainsbourg is her half-sister. One of the best Places tracks to visit is the melancholy “Devil Or Angel,” sung perfectly in English and driven along by an understated electric guitar. Click through to stream “Same Old Game” and watch the video for “Devil or Angel.”
